| Do Trapping Interventions Effectively Reduce or Eradicate
Populations of the American Mink (Mustela vison)? |
What is the aim
of the review?
To systematically collate and synthesise published and unpublished
evidence in order to adress the question “Do management
interventions effectively reduce or eradicate population numbers
of American Mink, Mustela vison?”
Who's in the review team?
At what stage is the review?
This review is now complete.
What is the rationale?
American mink are native to North America, imported into Britain
for fur farming in the late 1920s, inevitable escapes and deliberate
releases from fur farms led to establishment of substantial feral
populations. A threat to native species, such as water voles,
seabirds, waterfowl, and groundnesting birds, the control of M.
vison is now considered necessary in Britain. Determining the
impact that different interventions have will aid management planning
where mink populations present a problem. Results should inform
policy and guide future research.
How were the results
obtained?
A number of electronic databases were searched for information
using a range of search terms. Internet searches were conducted
in order to retrieve any relevant grey literature. In addition,
the bibliographies of relevant articles were examined for useful
references. The websites of several major UK conservation organisations
were also searched for useful publications. 690 unique references
were identified through the search strategy; 7 of these were accepted
into the final review having met all inclusion criteria, providing
10 datasets.
